Project description

RARIK currently operates the largest electricity distribution system in Iceland, as well as geothermal and district heating utilities in five locations in the country. The distribution system is under continuous renewal, and over the next 6 years the energy meters in RARIK's distribution system throughout the country, both electricity meters and heating meters, will be replaced by smart meters. The new smart meters have a communication device that sends information on consumption to RARIK's central collection point. Visits to customers by meter readers for the company will become a thing of the past. According to estimates, RARIK's meter readers have driven approx. 60,000 to 100,000 km per year to carry out the mandatory readings. The smart metering will therefore reduce emissions of greenhouse gases equivalent to at least 8.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. With the new energy meters, bills will be based on information on the actual usage each month instead of estimates and subsequent settlement following a reading. Customers can therefore better monitor their energy consumption, take action earlier if their usage is considered abnormal and thus reduce unnecessary energy consumption.

Objectives of the project

The goal of the project is to adopt a more modern method of meter reading and thereby improve customer service. Customers will be able to monitor their energy consumption better and take action earlier if energy consumption is abnormal, thereby reducing energy waste. Greenhouse gas emissions are also reduced by reducing driving by RARIK employees.

When is the target expected to be achieved?

Over the next 6 years, about 35 thousand energy meters will be replaced with new smart meters.

Measurement of performance

Success will be measured in the number of meters replaced.
